About SYSUCC

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) was established in 1964 and is one of the four earliest tumor hospitals in China. It is one of the affiliated hospitals of the prestigious Sun Yat-sen University. Located in the city of Guangzhou, SYSUCC is leading the way on a national frontier. It is the largest integrated cancer center in the whole of southern China for cancer care, education, research and prevention. SYSUCC's mission is to help people prevent and cure cancer.

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center has been awarded many prestigious titles: the National Key Disciplines (Oncology), the State Key Laboratory (SKL) of Oncology in South China, the Key Laboratory of Oncology of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Guangdong Province, the National Clinical Study Center for Anticancer Drugs, the Cancer Hospital of Chinese Traditional and Western Medicine, Doctoral Degree Authorization Center, and the Post-doctoral Station of Scientific Research. It is the supporting institute of the Guangdong Cancer Center, the Guangdong Esophageal Cancer Research Institute and the Guangdong Anti-cancer Association.

SYSUCC houses the editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Cancer (CJC). In 2014 the CJC became Science Citation Indexed (SCI), and its impact factor ranks the first among the national journals of Oncology. In the past four years, it has been continuously awarded with the Outstanding S&T Journals of China. In 2016 it was awarded an IF of 4.111.

Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center has recruited a talented team for patient care, education and scientific research. It has over 2,600 staff members, with 112 master student supervisors and 72 doctoral supervisors. 3 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors, 9 talents awarded the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth and 10 scientists from the One Thousand Talent Program.

SYSUCC is a modern medical service provider equipped with 1465 ward beds, 34 clinical departments, 8 administrative offices and 2 research departments. In 2016, the center had 830,000 out-patients consultations and over 93,000 patients were hospitalized, providing the largest volume of cancer medical service in China. Equipped with state of the art medical technology, SYSUCC has a premier radiation therapy center and recently introduced the da Vinci robot for minimally invasive surgeries. Moreover, SYSUCC has never stopped improving its quality of service pushing the boundaries of research and patient care. The responsibility system of chief expert for a single cancer disease was first applied in our center and the multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment plan for different cancer diseases was designed by our specialists. Under the effort of the physicians and nurses in SYSUCC, 22 clinical research results are internationally recognized and have been included in the NCCN guidelines.

As one of the earliest cancer hospitals founded in China, SYSUCC has always closely combined its clinical and research attributes, ranking top two in the Chinese Hospital of Scientific Impact Ranking. From 2006 to 2015, SYSUCC has been in charge of 984 research grants of provincial level or above including the “973 Chief Scientist Program”, the “863 Program”, the “National Science and Technology Support Program” and the “Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China”. Altogether,  seventy-five projects have been  awarded with scientific achievement awards of provincial level or above, including one project with the second prize of “National Natural Science Award”, three projects with the second prize of “National Science and Technology Progress Award”, one project with “Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award”, four projects with “Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award”, four projects with the first prize of “Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education” and six projects with the first prize of “Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award”.

In 2003, SYSUCC became a sister institution of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC), a top-ranking cancer research institute and hospital in the United States. In 2014, the “International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China” was awarded to MDACC for its long-term cooperation with SYSUCC in the field of cancer treatment and research. SYSUCC also has numerous international partners all around the world, including Karolinska Institutet, the University of Warwick, Erasmus Medical Center, among others. Together, we combine different approaches, views and novel research in order to conquer cancer.

Through infrastructure optimization, software and management system upgrades, SYSUCC has created an efficient working environment for its employees, as well as a patient-oriented atmosphere. In 2015, SYSUCC was ranked second in the Chinese Hospitals Best Employer Ranking.
